Embera people - a displaced community.
This small Embera Katio community are inland refugees. They had to leave their homes in the Northwest of Colombia and had to find another, more peaceful place for them to live. The small community found some land they could use at the border of a national park in the Caqueta, where they can grow plantains, corn and pineapple. Also they can live their until now without threats of armed forces, they've lost social contact and structures. Neighboring indigenous tribes don't share the same language or medical plants and spirits. The female teenagers of this Embera community suffer from frequent seizures, where they get violent and try to attack other community members or try to run to the nearby river to drown themselves. The Emberas call it "la enfermedad de las locas" (the crazy sickness). The seizures usually start with a headache and visions of a black dog.
